This survey found some amazing facts that are important to how we continue living. The voters are right– without a major kick in the rear from the government, going green is going to happen too slow for the country as a whole.

The survey found that 85% of voters think the fed needs to make help us become independent of foreign oil, 90% believe green builders and suppliers should push their products harder even if it costs more (which means the voters are willing to pay extra for it). Most voters agreed as well that the government should subsidize and lead the way for more green building. They also agreed that we should take some of the money out of building highways and put it into building mass transit.

Mass transit alone would put a huge dent in our oil consumption. A CSX train can get over 400 MPG and carry far more cargo than a truck, who gets probably 12 MPG at best and can only carry one truckload. If you’ve ever seen a train go by, you’ve seen how many truckloads one train can carry. And the same difference would be found in transporting people. There’s only so efficient cars will get before it makes no difference any more.

Almost everyone on the survey indicated they would spend more to buy a house that’s more energy efficient. Our biggest waste of energy is our house, and you can actually have a more energy efficient house without having to spend more money. If you build it right to start with.
